Warts
Rough, raised growths caused by the human papillomavirus. Harmless in themselves, but contagious, and often persistent or recurrent.
Book a Consultation WartsWarts are rough, raised growths on the skin caused by a viral infection, specifically the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are typically harmless, but they can be bothersome, especially on visible areas such as the hands or feet. They can also occur in the genital region or on the face.
Different strains of HPV cause different warts. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, such as touching an infected area, or by sharing personal items like towels and razors. Most warts are harmless and may disappear on their own, but they can persist for years or return after treatment.
Types of warts
- Common warts: dome-shaped with a rough surface and a grey-brown colour, on the hands, feet or elsewhere. They appear alone or in groups.
- Plantar warts: on the soles of the feet, painful when walking or standing, with dark specks visible beneath the surface.
- Flat warts: small and flat-topped, on the face, legs or arms, ranging from pink to light brown or yellow. Several often appear in one small area.
- Genital warts: in the genital or anal region, varying in shape and size. Some resemble a cauliflower; others are flat and white.
