Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Acute bronchitis follows a cold and clears in a week or two; chronic bronchitis is a cough with mucus for three months, two years running.
Book a Consultation Bronchitis
Bronchitis occurs when the lining of the bronchial tubes, the tubes that carry air to and from the lungs, becomes inflamed. Acute bronchitis often starts after a cold or other respiratory infection and typically lasts a week to ten days.
Chronic bronchitis is the more serious condition: long-term inflammation producing a persistent cough with mucus for at least three months, for two consecutive years, usually with shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness. Its primary cause is tobacco smoking, though long-term exposure to fumes and certain occupational conditions also contribute. It falls under the broader category of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
When to seek urgent care
See a doctor promptly if the cough comes with a fever above 38°C, if it produces blood, if breathlessness or wheezing is worsening, if the lips or nail beds take on a bluish tinge, if thinking clearly becomes difficult, or if the cough persists beyond three weeks.
