Sinusitis is the inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally the sinuses are filled with air; when they become blocked and fill with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. It affects millions of people every year and can follow a cold, a deviated septum or allergic rhinitis.
The four types
- Acute sinusitis: a sudden onset of symptoms, often after a cold. It lasts less than four weeks.
- Subacute sinusitis: inflammation lasting between four and eight weeks.
- Chronic sinusitis: inflammation persisting for more than eight weeks.
- Recurrent sinusitis: several episodes over the course of a year.
Sinus Headaches vs. Migraines
Sinus headaches may feel like sinusitis, causing pressure around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, and may worsen when bending forward. However, this pain is sometimes caused by a migraine.
Signs and Symptoms of Sinus Headaches:
- Pain, pressure, and fullness in the cheeks, brow, or forehead
- Worsening pain when bending forward or lying down
- Stuffy nose
- Fatigue
- Aches in the upper teeth
Sinusitis vs. Migraine:
Sinusitis headaches are usually triggered after a viral cold or upper respiratory infection and involve thick, discolored mucus, facial pain, and sometimes a decreased sense of smell. The pain is often localized to one cheek or upper teeth, and it lasts for several days.
Migraines are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and are not typically linked with thick nasal mucus or sinus infection symptoms. Migraine pain typically lasts for hours to a couple of days.

- Toothache
- Eye infections or problems with vision
